The Lexus IS has achieved a five star rating in the latest Euro NCAP crash test for adult occupant protection with 33 points awarded overall.
The IS was also awarded four stars for child protection and a further two stars for pedestrian protection, the highest score amongst its direct competitors.
The IS has scored particularly well on the side impact test, achieving full marks. Additionally, the innovative front passenger twin-chamber airbag combined with the knee airbags (a segment first) have proved to be very effective.
The Lexus IS is comprehensively equipped with some of the most technologically advanced passive and active safety systems available on the market today.
The strong, stiff bodyshell is designed to minimise distortion of the cabin, whilst pedestrian safety concerns have also influenced its frontal structure. A sophisticated energy absorbing bumper, cowl and bonnet help to reduce pedestrian injuries, should the worst happen.
The airbags in the IS represent the most advanced standard passive safety package in its class. The eight sensor-controlled dual stage Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front and side SRS curtain airbags register the intensity of the impact and even the position of the driver's head. They then react accordingly to deploy the safest possible way for that specific set of circumstances. The design of the twin chamber airbag contains a deep depression in the centre of the airbag, creating two 'chambers' which spread the initial force of the impact across the shoulders, upper chest, face and neck, greatly reducing the effect of that initial impact.
